Goalkeeper Platter and Midfielder Weiler Return To Thunder

St. Paul, Minn. (February 13, 2008) -- The Minnesota Thunder announced today that starting goalkeeper Nic Platter and midfielder Dale Weiler will return to the Thunder for the 2008 season. Each player has signed a one year contract with two option years.

Platter took over the starting job from long-time keeper Joe Warren midway through the 2007 season. Platter played in 18 regular season games during last year’s campaign and tallied 85 saves while logging a goals against average of 1.166. 

“Nic has developed into one of the top young goalkeepers in the league,” said Thunder head coach Amos Magee. “He became a starter for us midway through the year and was outstanding for our team down the stretch. Nic has a great future at the Thunder and by surrounding him with better players, he will continue to be successful.”

The year 2008 will mark Platter’s fourth season with the Thunder.

The Los Angelos native graduated from the University of California – Davis where is he the all-time shutout leader with 17 and had a career GAA of 1.01.

Weiler was one of the bight spots for the Thunder’s 2007 season. He was signed midway through the season after completing his degree at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. Weiler played in eight regular season games last season and logged two assists in 273 minutes. He was voted to the USL Team of the Week on August 28th.

“I believe Dale has a very bright future with the Thunder,” said Magee. “He is a Hudson, Wisconsin native who played with the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association as a child. He is fast, skilled and talented and will be a major part of our developing team. I am very excited to get Dale signed here for three years.”

Weiler completed his fourth and final season at UWM in 2006.

The Minnesota Thunder will open its home season on Sunday, May 4 at James Griffin Stadium against the Rochester Raging Rhinos at 5:05 p.m. Season tickets are currently on sale by visiting www.mnthunder.com or by calling 651.917.8326.
