Schulte To Return To Thunder; Marcina Transferred To Rochester
Minnesota Thunder News Release
Saint Paul, Minn. (August 27, 2008) -- The Minnesota Thunder announced today that two-time USL Second Division Defender of the Year, Mark Schulte, has joined the club on loan from the Cleveland City Stars for the remainder of the season. Schulte recently guided the City Stars team he captained to the USL Second Division Championship on Saturday night, beating the Charlotte Eagles 2-1. To free up a roster spot, forward Alen Marcina has been transferred to the Rochester Rhinos for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Schulte, 6-3 and 215 pounds, returns to the Thunder after having played across the world the past five seasons. After spending four seasons with the Thunder, Schulte spent one season in Iceland before moving on to the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer. After a stint with the crew, Schulte became the first American to play professionally in Uruguay, and one of the few to play in South America. In Uruguay he played with the Montevideo Wanderers. After a successful season below the equator, Schulte returned to American soccer where he has spent the last two seasons at Cleveland. Schulte will join the Thunder in Miami for their matches on Friday and Sunday.

“We are extremely excited to secure the services of such an experienced defender,” said Thunder head coach Donny Gramenz. “Mark will provide us with leadership and a winning attitude as we fight for a playoff spot over the next six games.”

Marcina has played in 18 games for the Thunder so far this season, tallying three goals and two assists.

“We are grateful for the time that Marcina put into the Thunder this season,” said Gramenz. “We wish him well in his future endeavors.”

The Thunder will play the next four games on the road before returning home for the final two games of the regular season on September 13 and 20th. For tickets, call 651.989.5151 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.
